Date of Birth: Born on the 24th of June 1919
Personal Details: Andrew was the son of Mr and Mrs N.G. Sutherland. The family had moved to Cambridge from Feilding and Andrew attended Cambridge Primary School. He furthered his education in Hamilton, probably at Hamilton Technical School.
Whilst Andrew and his parents had moved in Hamilton in the 1930's, Andrew himself had returned and been living and working in Cambridge before joining the RNZAF. At the time of his enlistment he was on the staff of the Bank of New Zealand in Cambridge.
On Friday the 6th of September 1940 Andrew, freshly trained as a Sergeant-Observer, was guest of honour at a morning tea farewell function put on for him by the Cambridge Patriotic Committee, and presided over by Edgar James, the Mayor of Cambridge. Others who spoke during the event were the Deputy Mayor Arthur Nicholl, the RSA President Richard Newcombe, and the BNZ Branch Manager Mr F.E. Coote.
