Pardon The Expression (Granada, as Leonard Swindley)
The only series ever spun-off Coronation Street, featuring one of its most popular early characters, Leonard Swindley. Having left the street, Swindley is now assistant manager of a northern branch of the department stores Dobson and Hawks. Swindley was the prototype pompous character which Arthur would later stamp on such popular roles as Mainwaring in Dad’s Army, and Potter. Of note, many famous faces popped up in various episodes, including John Le Mesurier, John Laurie and Wendy Richard, who all later joined Arthur in Dad’s Army.

Arthur Lowe joined the cast of this popular, long running series for five episodes in a guest star role as Doctor Maxwell, also known as The Major. However the friction between them all, and Upton’s fondness for Maxwell’s 17 year old daughter Sue, soon saw the two young doctors ‘at large’ again.
